Piano Lessons with Daniel Linker

I am an experienced musician and educator based in Greenbank, Bristol. I offer piano lessons to children and adults, from absolute beginners to advanced players. I am also a composer and can help you to bring out your musical ideas, create your own pieces, and acquire a deeper understanding of how music works.

I can teach in English and Spanish.

About Me

I started my journey with the piano as a young teenager. Once I saw a child of my age playing a piece by J.S.Bach and felt I wanted to do that. This same day I asked my parents for piano lessons and they granted my wish. This is how it all started. At a more advanced stage, one of my teachers suggested that I would learn and understand better the piano if I had some students of my own. In this way, I started my journey into teaching –25 years ago!

I followed my musical vocation by studying for a degree in Music Theory at the University of Chile and Piano at the Catholic University of Chile. Along with my devotion to classical music, I took part in a notorious jazz/rock band in Chile at the time. In 2004 we got the awards 'The best band of the year' and 'The best artist of the year'. I also developed my interests as a composer. Between 2011 and 2017, and thanks to the financial sponsorship of the Chilean Government, I undertook an intense period of study at the University of Bristol, where I did an MA in Composition for Film, another MA in Contemporary Music Composition, and a Ph.D. in Composition. I got my doctoral degree in 2017. After this, I acquired vast experience teaching music in universities at under and postgraduate levels.

I love helping people in their musical journeys. Everyone has different goals and challenges. As a teacher, I count on a vast range of pedagogical tools and methodologies that I combine according to each student's needs. I always aim to develop a human connection with my students, where respect and empathy are at the core.

I am currently based in Bristol where I teach in my piano studio. I also develop my own research and musical projects as a Visiting Research Fellow at Bath Spa University.

The Lesson

I am a very flexible teacher and adapt to the needs and goals of each student. I believe that every lesson should be a stimulating and rewarding experience both for the student and for the teacher, so I always aim to create a warm and supportive environment.

For beginners, I emphasize building a solid foundation. This involves:

  • developing a strong sense of pulse and rhythm

  • learning an efficient and healthy piano technique

  • learning music literacy (playing from sheet music)

  • playing various musical styles (classical and popular)

  • learning how to study

More advanced players benefit from guidance on various aspects, such as:

  • improving their technique

  • selecting new repertoire

  • strategies to tackle new challenges

  • encouragement to practice and develop further

Online Lessons

I have been giving online piano lessons successfully for the last three years. I have students all around the world including Tokyo, Istanbul, New York, and Santiago de Chile, as well as many locations in the UK. I ask the students to log into the meeting using 2 cameras (e.g. a laptop and a mobile phone) and I do the same. One camera is to see each other faces as in a normal video call, and the other is to see our hands. It is very easy to set up and works perfectly.

DBS and Public Liability

I have a clean Enhanced DBS Check that I can show on demand.

As a member of the Musician's Union I count with Public Liability covering my music teaching.

ABRSM Grades

I have a 100% success rate with my student that have opted to do grades. Let me know if you are interested in this.

Testimonials

Daniel has been an absolute great teacher in our daughter's piano journey since January. It's been an amazing ride witnessing her growth. The classes are an absolute delight for her – she's always counting down to them!
Each session brings a fresh discovery and a quick recap of something she's learned before, keeping her engaged and excited. We cannot recommend
him enough. Sabrina and Ben

I'm delighted to share our journey with Daniel, my son's remarkable piano teacher. Over the past two years of online lessons, Daniel's teaching method has rekindled my 10-12 year old son's waning interest in piano. Despite previous experiences with another 2 teachers, Daniel's approach has revitalized my son's enthusiasm for learning, leading to genuine excitement before each session. Witnessing the remarkable progress he's made under Daniel's guidance, we confidently and wholeheartedly recommend him as an inspiring and dedicated piano teacher.

Daniel is a professional musician and composer and has taught my son, age 10, piano for about a year and prepared him (as well as facilitating) the preliminary ABRSM grade, achieving a very high merit. Henry has an in person lesson at Daniel’s piano studio, which he really loves to attend and always comes out humming the new music and knowing what he needs to do for practice. Daniel is a very sensitive and approachable teacher and is always open to discussing any aspect of Henry’s learning and making adjustments to the delivery of lessons or workplans. He chooses a wide range of compositions and always listens to Henrys musical preferences. He has also been very organised with communication on WhatsApp, easy payment systems, provision of online lessons when required and even fully facilitating the exam. We unreservedly recommend Daniel.
